Carleigh Baum

My name is Carleigh Baum and I am currently a fourth year student at the University of Dayton. I plan to graduate in the Spring of 2021, with a BA in both History and Economics. I also am completing a minor in religious studies. Though I will be graduating soon, I’d describe myself as a “forever student” driven by curiousity to build on my current skills and expand my abilities

In addition to my studies, I am a member of UD Feminist United and Spectrum: Gender and Sexuality Alliance at the University. In Xenia, I am a monthly volunteer at 4Paws for Ability, assisting in raising dogs for service. In my free time you can find me reading poetry or a good fantasy novel, swimming laps, or hiking in local parks.

When not at UD, I am a resident of the Cleveland, Ohio area. My family has always had animals as fosters, or service dogs in training (Canine Companions for Independence is our current organization). With three older brothers with families of their own in the area, it can be a zoo at any given time. I am currently hoping to start a career in research

By the Spring of 2021, I will be a proud Alum of the beautiful University of Dayton. UD has helped me grow as a driven, ethical, and confident individual.

Out of many organizations offered at UD, I particularly enjoyed my time as a member of Spectrum and UD Feminist United. Challenging topics and different points of view were discussed constantly. Through these conversations, I was able to expand my worldview and make close friends.

I’ll cherish the memories of the friends I’ve made, my professors who have pushed me to grow, and the beautiful campus

Work for the Dayton History Project: Dayton and the 1918 Pandemic

My concentration for the DHP was the story of the Nurses and civic assistance during the Influenza Pandemic of 1918 in Dayton.

Exploring the story of the women on the ground, in the hospitals and homes of sick individuals was a discovery of power story after powerful story. I got to examine what a day in the life for a nurse was like. I got to pick apart the mindset of women watching this Epidemic strike their city, and decide to do something about it.

To write the paper, I first compiled a chronological list of events, newspapers articles, and deaths I knew occurred during the Epidemic. This allowed my to create a big picture of where the story was heading. I was then able to split the story into appropriate sections, expanding on topics that interested me, and explaining events as necessary.

Archival work

Through the DHP, I was exposed to several different archives. The Dayton Metro Library, The Wright State University Archive, and even some electronic sources from the Miami Valley Hospital Archive. All locations had invaluable primary sources I used to put together a picture of Dayton’s nurses during the Epidemic

Secondary Sources

The work of past historians and their commentary on the Influenza as a global Pandemic has been incredibly helpful. I was able to examine the context of the time period and how larger events influenced the local happenings I was discovering.
